What is lymphedema? Lymphedema is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. In addition, tissues with lymphedema are at risk for infection.
What causes lymphedema? - Damage to lymphatic system during treatment of cancer, most notably breast cancer, which may not develop until months or years after treatment. Frequently seen after lymph node dissection, surgery, and/or radiation.

How is lymphedema treated? Most people with lymphedema follow a daily regimen of treatment as suggested by their physician and/or Certified Lymphedema Therapist. Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), including Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), is a primary tool in lymphedema management. An exercise routine, also provided by your Therapist, is vital to the treatment process.
